We don’t know.
Neither do you.
The course is known.
The starting line is known.
The finish line is known.
The distance between them? That part is up to the dice.
DSA Mystery Miles is a trail race built around a simple idea: everyone starts together, everyone runs the same course, and nobody knows the final race distance until moments before the start.
The course will use a fixed mile-ish trail loop. One lap is guaranteed. Then, approximately 30 seconds before the race begins, the Race Director will roll two four-sided dice.
Your race distance is:
1 lap + the total rolled on 2d4. (In the case of the above example image 1 lap + 1 + 4 = 6 laps.)
That means the dice will add anywhere from two to eight additional laps, giving runners a total race distance of approximately 3 miles-ish to 9 miles-ish depending on the actual loop distance.
There are no different distance registrations. No choosing the shorter race because your legs feel tired that morning. Everyone gets the same roll, the same number of laps, and the same moment of realization when the dice hit the table.
This is trail racing, Dirty Soles style. The course does not need to be exactly one mile, and the final distance does not need to land neatly on a traditional race distance. Expect dirt, roots, hills, gravel, singletrack, and whatever else the selected venue gives us.
You bring the trail shoes.
