Dirty Soles Adventures
Ruck the Gauntlet
FAQ
If and when questions come in, we'll post them here for everyone to see— even the really dumb ones!
Q: What is the course like?
A: The course is entirely unpaved! It has dirt, roots, rocks, streams, ruts, twists, turns, trees, shrubberies, pine needles, pine cones, weeds, sticks… and so much more. It’s not flat, it’s not super-hilly, it’s got single-track through a portion, it’s wide enough for three or four people to maybe ruck abreast in other portions. It’s not highly technical. But it’s got enough going on that you need to pay attention.
Q: Can I use a weighted vest instead of a Ruck?
A: You betcha! We don’t care what you carry. Backpack, ruck, over-the-shoulder sandbag, weighted vest, 5 gallon buckets, you can carry a giant stuffed teddy bear— it doesn’t matter. It can even be a kitchen sink. The key thing is that IT MUST BE CARRIED (and please, we need to be able to weigh it too!) No dragging, no rolling, no levitating.
Q: Will weights be provided?
A: Hell no! There is no way we could provide enough weights for more than one or two people and we don’t want to anyway. You bring what you think you’ll be carrying— please! You can keep your spare weights wherever you want, but we’ll try to set an area near the transition for competitors to quickly and easily change out their load.
Q: What if we add weight to our pack somewhere along the route? Will it count toward our score?
A: You will weigh in and out for each lap. The lesser number will be the one used. SO… If you leave with 30 lbs and arrive with 28 lbs, then 28 lbs is used in the math. On the other hand, if you find a very pretty rock that makes your bag weigh 35 lbs on arrival, then the lesser number, your 30 lbs weigh-out number is used.
Q: Do I need to do the entire 3 hours?
A: Not at all. You can do as little as a single lap— anything less won’t be counted toward your score. All you need to do to tap out.
Q: How do I “tap out”?
A: First let the Race Director or another staff member know that you don’t want to continue with the race. They will then hold a little ceremony that involves a bell and a grand announcement that you are finished with the race. And that’s it. They’ll make a notation with the Ruck-o_Tron 3000 and no further data pertaining to you can be entered. And once the ceremony is over YOU CAN’T CHANGE YOUR MIND. It’s over. No take backs.
Q: Maybe I don’t really want to drop out, but can I at least take a break?
A: Absolutely. You’ll be able to take a rest anytime. You can do it while on the course. Even better, you can do it at the transition area between weigh-in and weigh-out. There you’ll be able to grab a refreshing drink. Maybe sit and talk with people. Scroll your phone. Take selfies. Walk to your car. It’s up to you! (But if you’re going to be resting for a long while, let us know so we don’t think you wandered off the trail.)
Q: Will there be an AID STATION?
A: Yes. We will provide Water, LMNT electrolytes, and caffeine-free Tailwind. Bananas. Whole ones! (And you won’t have to finish to get one either!)
